Resource Guide

Pass On the Excess!

Getting rid of things may be easier if you can picture someone else benefiting from your discarded things.

  • Advertise larger items like furniture, appliances, power tools, or computer equipment in your local newspaper or on craigslist.org.

  • Sell books, clothing, and furniture on consignment or on the internet

  • Ask your friends and family if they might need or want these things.

  • Stick a sign that says free to good home, by the curb with the item.

Other things to keep in mind

  • Charitable organizations can not handle the burden of fixing junk, and the underprivileged do not need broken toasters, lumpy mattresses, or eight-track-tape players.

  • Give only clothing that is in good shape to charities.  They receive a billion pounds of clothing every year.  They use less than half of the clothing they receive.  Clothing is cheep and the cost of sorting, cleaning, storing and transporting the clothes is higher than their value.

  • To determine appropriate tax deductibility values for clothing donations, visit the website itsdeductible.com or the Salvation Army Donation guide at satruck.org
